We are excited to share that Mr. Luca Pennati (Doctoral Researcher at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and key member of Plasma-PEPSC) presented “A Parallel and Highly-Portable HPC Poisson Solver: Preconditioned Bi-CGSTAB with alpaka” at the 26th IEEE International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Scientific and Engineering Computing (PDSEC 2025), held in Milan, Italy, on June 3rd, 2025.
In his presentation, Mr. Pennati introduced a parallel and GPU-accelerated Poisson solver based on the Preconditioned Bi-CGSTAB method, using MPI for distributed parallelism and alpaka for shared-memory and cross-platform portability. Performance was evaluated on NVIDIA H100 and AMD MI250X GPUs, comparing different preconditioning strategies, including Block Jacobi and Chebyshev iteration. The solver achieved up to 50× speed-up and demonstrated strong scalability, highlighting a portable and efficient solution that contributes to the core objectives of Plasma-PEPSC.
